“Entre pájaros y árboles”
Visual Narratives of the forest. A research about trees, birds and the people of the amazon forest.
Photographer Robertho Miguel Paredes Coral from Puerto Maldonado (Peru), honoring his amazonian heritage, is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Folkloristics and Applied Heritage Studies at the University of Tartu, Estonia. Robertho’s work explores ways to empower Amazonian communities to use art to raise awareness about the impact of climate change and the disappearance of natural forests in the Amazonian region of Madre de Dios, Peru. The communities have an intimate relationship with the forest, perceived not merely as a geographical entity but as an integral component of their identity, spirituality and cosmovision. Robertho's documentary on his father Miguel's Amazonian Forest knowledge will be developed during the workshops of this project.
The proposed project will engage Amazonian communities to develop a documentary portraying Amazonian reality on their living environment. The intention is to communicate how this escalating condition transforms their ways of life and ability to shield against its expansion into cultural and physical territories elsewhere. Robertho is currently working on his fieldwork in Puerto Maldonado, peruvian amazon, participating in talking circles, doing intervirwws and producing videos/photo essays for the project.
The project proposes an ecological and democratic alternative to acknowledge environmental risk. It provides inclusion and empowerment of the amazonian communities, opening up a space to make local voices and narratives heard. This underpins KONE goals as an empowering institution while drawing on an interdisciplinary, participatory research approach.
With this project, there is an opportunity to change the way we protect and visualize the Amazon intangible knowledge and heritage. This proposed research project can serve to build a new narrative about the problems of nature from an local and amazonian perspective.
In 2024 robertho is analysing the data collected in his fieldwork and, he is going to present a draft to the documentary in order to present it in 2025 for the in the summer session
