Petrissa Eckle states in her article “Risk of Large Oil Spills: A Statistical Analysis in the Aftermath of
Deepwater Horizon,” 11% of oil spills between 1974 and 2010 were refinery related spills. Oil spills have their own set of devastating effects they can impart upon the environment and even though they do not happen as frequently as wastewater spills, they are still nothing to laugh at. 11% may not seem like a large number when 75% of oil spills were ship-based, but that 11% accounted for 113 oil spills. Those 113 oil spills come out to around 3 spills a year from refineries which raises some concern when looking at their methods of production. These spills, and the risks that come with them should not be taken lightly, and therefore, more action is required by the government and oil companies to install heavier, tightly-sealed, regulations and preventative measures to ensure the safety of our environment, and planet.
