Oscar Shaftel and the Menace of McCarthyism

Restitution

In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court declared unconstitutional the laws under which the three Queens College professors had been fired. In 1980, the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York urged action on their behalf, admitting that their dismissals were the result of the “shameful era of McCarthyism in America.” Two years later, New York City granted the three financial restitution. Oscar Shaft began adjunct teaching at Queens College in 1973. He donated his entire adjunct salary to establish a scholarship for incoming freshmen.
