Opening Up Space: A Lovely Technofeminist Opportunity

The Irony of the "Merciless Race"

Bradley categorizes her captors as belonging to a "merciless race" for their mistreatment of herself and her fellow crewmates. Ironically, the native inhabitants involved in her abduction treated her with relative decency, allowing her a camel to ride throughout their lengthy trek to ensure the enhanced ransom of a female captive. Meanwhile, at the time of publication the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 had not yet been passed, implicating her own white culture in the same injustice. As we will see, Bradley justifies the hypocrisy of her claims of mercilessness and basic human treatment by categorizing human worth by race and religious affiliation.
