Notational Project

What are you, Nuts?

Running away from the Licorice Forest you really aren't looking where you are going until all of a sudden you hear an ominous crunch. Your eyes open in shock, "Crunch?" you say "What is there here that would make that crunching sound". A nut. You look down and there is a nut. A peanut to be exact. Still in the shell. At this point you are confused, "I thought this was a Candyland, not Nutland" you proclaim aloud. All of a sudden a rustling in the bushes occurs and out pops a warm little old woman with a hat and a squirrel on her shoulder. "Hush child" she says "and come with me". "I'm Gramma Nut you see, and I'm here to help you on your journey to save Candyland". "But Gramma Nut" you say "Why are there nuts in Candyland?". Gramma Nut explains to you that immediately after her siblings threw Sweet out into the cold, she was approached in secret by her brother Salty. Salty explained that he did indeed love Sweet and that he would build a Salty shelter in Candyland so that she would always know that he loved her and would be with her. By the time Gramma Nut had finished with the story you were back at her house. She invited you inside and asked if you wanted a cup of water from the fridge. "THE FRIDGE?!" you cried elated. "Gramma Nut if you have a fridge, what other sorts of technological advancements do you have". "Well dearie" Gramma Nut replied "if you're asking me if I have Sibelius unfortunately the answer is no, none of us have any music notation objects". "However" she continued "I do have this collabsible printing press, if you know what to do with it." she said winking. She then leaves you alone with the printing press and your thoughts. At first you have no idea what to do with this printing press, and then you remember what you learned in History of Western Music, what feels like ages ago. You remember how it shocked the world when printing music became popular and you want nothing more than to do that again. Another moment of shining clarity, you remembered what you wrote in an assignment about the printing press an an music notational innovation. [A common theme within musical notation is accessibility. This topic directly plays in with the notation of music in the western world because it really made musical power centers where there were not before. In the textbook it states that “By the end of the sixteenth century, Rome, Nuremburg…had joined Venice and Paris as centers of musical publishing”. (163) Also this innovation enabled common people to have well known copies of music and songs in their household for their own musical pleasure. This simple innovation in music notation changed everyday life for so many people. The textbook states “publishers and printed music had become indispensable parts of musical life”. (163)] Using this information and an extra piece of peanut brittle from Gramma Nut, you set out with your collapsible printing press revitalized and ready to take on the rest of Candyland.
