| Eine vielbeschäftigte Schlange. Am Schluß eines Vortrages, den Mark Twain in Neu-Seeland hielt und worin er die Temperenzbewegung berührte, erzählte er folgende Schnurre: In meinem Vaterlande kam vor einigen Jahren ein Mann in eine Stadt, und man sagte ihm: "Sie können nirgends, außer in der Apotheke, etwas zu trinken bekommen." Er ging also zum Apotheker, der ihm sagte: "Ich kann Ihnen ohne ärztliches Rezept nichts zu trinken geben!" Aber der Mann, der dem Verschmachten nahe war, erwiederte: "Dazu habe ich keine Zeit; geht es nicht anders?" Der Apotheker belehrte ihn: "Ja, ich könnte Ihnen wohl etwas zu trinken geben, wenn eine Schlange Sie gebissen hätte." Der Mann bat darauf um die Adresse der Schlange, der Apotheker gab Sie ihm und der Fremdling ging fort. The pharmacist instructed him, "Yes, I could probably give you something to drink if a snake had bitten you." The man then asked for the address of the snake, the pharmacist gave it to him and the stranger left.
