17th Century Chinese Qur'an
This Qur'an contains a mixture of Islamic styles of calligraphy and illumination along with local Chinese styles, symbols and aesthetics. In the image above, there is a Chinese lantern drawn that is hanging off from hooks on both sides of the image. The script written is a variation of muhaqqaq, and the brush strokes are similar to Chinese calligraphy and referred to sini (Chinese) Arabic. The people that are Chinese-speaking Muslims are known as the Hui, and most in the community practice Sunni Islam, although there are multiple factions divided between a number of traditionalist, Sufi and reformist.
