Maracas
Maracas are small hand-instruments originating in Latin America. They are often associated with the music of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti, Colombia, and other locations in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The first maracas were made of gourd or coconut shells filled with dried beans or seeds. Modern ones are made of plastic, leather, and/or wood.
They require modest skill to play in time with other musical instruments as one must compensate for the time it takes from moving the hands until the pellets inside hit the surface and create the sound. They can also be struck against the legs and hands to produce different timbres of sounds.
