La guitarra, uno de los instrumentos más comunes, se remonta más de 4.000 años. La guitarra se dice que está influenciado por otros instrumentos de cuerda de Europa y el Medio Oriente. Durante los períodos medieval y renacentista, de más cerca contemporánea la guitarra era la vihuela, que consistía en 6 o 7 cuerdas. El primer instrumento que fue reconocida como una guitarra fue creado en el siglo 15 y era más pequeña que la forma en que la conocemos hoy en día y sólo tenía cuatro cuerdas, similar al laúd. Desde luego, no fue hasta el 1800 que las características de la guitarra 6 cuerdas. Finalmente, no fue hasta finales del siglo 19 que la guitarra acústica clásica que conocemos hoy consistió en la forma y el sonido como nuestras guitarras clásicas hoy. 

En América Latina, la guitarra y otros instrumentos de cuerda similares se han utilizado en muchos géneros musicales latinoamericanos. Las raíces de la guitarra y otros instrumentos de cuerda hicieron su camino hacia el Caribe y América Latina en el año 1500, cuando los conquistadores españoles y otros trajeron con ellos muchos de sus instrumentos musicales tradicionales. Estos instrumentos fueron rápidamente adoptadas tanto por las personas procedentes de África y de los nativos americanos también. Con el tiempo, los instrumentos de guitarra y otro de cuerda como el Jarana se adoptó en las culturas nativas y las personas.

The guitar, one of the most common instruments, can be traced back more than 4,000 years. The guitar is said to be influenced by other string instruments from Europe and the Middle East. During the medieval and Renaissance periods, the guitar’s closest contemporary was the vihuela, which consisted of 6 or 7 strings. The first instrument that was recognized as a guitar was created in the 15th century and was smaller than how we know it today and only had four strings, similar to the lute. From then it was not until the 1800’s that the guitar featured 6 strings. Finally it was not until the end of the 19th century that the classical acoustic guitar we know today consisted of the shape and sound as our classical guitars today.

In Latin America the guitar and other similar stringed instruments have been used in many Latin American musical genres. The roots of the guitar and other stringed instruments made their way to the Caribbean and Latin America in the 1500s, when the Spanish and other conquistadores brought with them many of their traditional musical instruments. These instruments were adopted quickly by both the people from Africa and by American natives as well. Eventually, the guitar and other string instruments like the Jarana was adopted into the natives cultures and people.
