Hagenbeck was a flamboyant character who supplied zoos and circuses with wild animals and native people. His zoo was the first to remove cages and build fake scenery and mountains so the animals could be seen in their 'natural' habitat. grand old trees + beautifully
kept grounds. Heavy hail
storm when returning
2 1/2 hour drive.
July 28 Shopped in morning
with N. + I attended the Arts
+ Crafts Museum. Large coll.
of old carved furniture iron
work porcelain + Jap. bronze
all work but textiles + paintings.
Some modern work of the best
type only. In P.M. drove to
Hagenbecks. Very unusual
arrangement of artificial rock
+ cliffs for animals. Many lions
and a good general collection of
animals + birds. Beautiful
grounds, gardens, restaurant + music
Also a luna [?] park in connection
Took a long walk afer with Jep
