Joseph Whiting Lincoln (1859-1938)

The son of a cooper in Accord, Massachusetts, Lincoln worked for a time as a shoemaker at two nearby factories until his skills were replaced by automation. He had designed and made decoys for personal use and after receiving numerous commissions from neighboring sportsmen, went into business making decoys (Hopkins 2016: 81).

Lincoln is considered the master of the slat form Canada goose decoy, or “barrel geese” as he called them.  He also carved distinguished wood decoys and that are known for their clean and crisp lines and stylized, precisely painted plumage (Starr 49: 152).
