In-House Video Production in Higher Education: Key Challenges

The creation of engaging video-based material for a course can seem daunting. Considerations can include cost, the amount of equipment needed to film and edit footage, and technical skills. Preparing for a shoot and shooting can raise multiple challenges, associated, for example, with sourcing locations and participants, managing unexpected situations, and needing to reshoot footage. Time investments can be considerable, from storyboarding to postproduction. Copyright issues may need to be considered (Vallier 2010), particularly if any third-party material is to be integrated into the resources. Strong awareness may exist of the need for a video, along with worthy ideas, but academics may have little sense of the practicalities required to realize their vision. Similarly, academics may have only a broad sense of how the video may be able to enhance learning and engagement in relation to other potential teaching and learning activities.
