In four separate but loosely-related essays, Gates takes a cultural studies approach to examining the culture, and politics of the Black diaspora. Gates focuses primarily on the Anglophone diaspora, particularly the British and American contexts, exploring "diaspora aesthetics" through the lens of the "culture wars" and examining the resulting clash between Afrocentrism and Eurocentrism in the U.S. and Britain.
