Josquin Deprez's Ave Maria was iconic in pioneering the advancement of the technique called imitative counterpoint. Imitative counterpoint is when two or more voices enter at different times and some of the melodic content is repeated. King Dorian decided to use the initial melody of the well known piece Greensleeves and attempt to create a work of imitative counterpoint based on it.
