Liberia
Liberia is one of the countries on the coast of Western Africa, near Sierra Leone and Guinea. Liberia is an interesting country, because they have an abundance of resources such as iron ore, timber, diamonds, gold, hydropower but they are unable to exploit these abundances due to poor human capital and infrastructure. As a result, it has lowered and minimized their economic development. They have so many resources available to use and make them profit, but they lack the infrastructure to exploit these resources. Diamonds are one of Liberia’s most useful resources. The recent increase in diamond production in Liberia is due to the increase in the number of diamond deposits being found and exploited which has improved the mechanization process of exploiting such diamonds. Another main resource in Liberia is Iron Ore. In the 1970’s, Liberia was Africa’s leading producer of iron ore, and still is one of the top exporters of iron ore today. Furthermore, the major resources that are being exported from Liberia are rubber, diamond, timber, iron, coffee and cocoa. As you can see in the map, there are plenty of mountain ranges, rivers, and even the ocean that Liberia can use to find and exploit natural resources. If they had the infrastructure to do so, they would become much better off economically. Right now they just need to get their infrastructure together because if they do so then they could become one of Africa’s most abundant countries with resources. They are very rich in gold and diamond deposits and if they were to exploit these it would only mean good things for Liberia. In conclusion, Liberia is a very unique country in terms of having the abundance of resources, but not being able to do anything with them due to a poor economic infrastructure.
