Global Studies Africa Textbook: An Open Global Historical Studies Textbook

Introduction

Welcome to the Global and Historical Studies Africa Textbook: An Open Global Historical Studies Textbook!

The curriculum of Butler University aims to enrich and enhance the lives of its students, and one of the core requirements of every student is to take two Global Historical Studies, or GHS, classes during his or her time on campus. Those at Butler University enrolled in Jim Keating's two GHS sections titled “Revolutionary Europe and Colonial Nigeria” during the Spring 2020 semester joined together to create an online book covering various topics pertaining to Africa. These topics include the culture, politics, healthcare, industry and economics while also covering the history and background of African nations. The continent of Africa is not a monolith, and so each topic is examined in the context of one of five regions in Africa: West, South, East, Central, or North Central. This book is available in an online format so that it is free for anyone to use on Butler’s campus and beyond. Within the individual chapters of the book, documentation of sources and licensing of images is included.
