It is used to search the library's holdings of books and other materials such as periodicals, video/sound recordings, microform and other physical and electronic materials. What it cannot do is find single articles in journals. Before starting her search Jessy skimmed the Identifying Keywords handout and watched the IUCAT tutorial on YouTube (both were created by the Library's Teaching and Learning Department), and came up with a few search terms:
Next, she went to the Library's homepage (https://libraries.indiana.edu) to access the catalog. Using the basic search screen, Jessy performed an all fields search by placing the search terms “peatland and Indonesia” in the search box.
Even though she knew she could get materials from other libraries in the IU system, Jessy limited her result to show only the items on the Bloomington campus and was able to find both e-books and physical books.
She also noticed a streaming video named Dry Season came up in her results. Jessy was not interested in watching any videos but out of curiosity clicked on its title. After reading the summary in the record she realized the video would be helpful to her research.
Jessy was now ready to look for some peer-reviewed articles.
