The Good
Surveillance could reduce crime dramatically
- Cameras and microphones can catch criminals in the act no matter where they are.
- With total surveillance, crimes could be detected, and authorities could be sent out while crimes are still taking place.
- People would be much less likely to commit easily detectable crimes like assault or breaking and entering, if they knew they could be detected and arrested within minutes.
- Voice and facial recognition could make it much easier to identify criminals in situations where they weren’t able to be arrested.
- Many crimes that currently go unreported, such as domestic abuse, could be detected by surveillance without the victim having to put themselves in further risk.
- More surveillance would mean authorities would, in most cases, know without a doubt whether or not you’re guilty of a crime. This would reduce cases of innocent citizens being stopped by police or arrested, which has sometimes led to high profile instances of police violence, and violence towards the officers.
Surveillance could have marked benefits for public health
- Surveillance could detect artificially created viruses that could spread disease, and quarantine those individuals or areas before they spread.
- Would be easier to track infected individuals and get them away from the general public.
