Journey To the Cafe

9. Walk to the Cafe

The Press: The walk from 1644 Beverly Boulevard to 1651 W Temple St is approximately an 8-minute walk and roughly 0.4 miles. Union Ave was the main route taken to arrive at our destination.

In my mind: There are used clothes being showcased at a store right beside Tribal Cafe, our next destination. The storekeepers appear to be Latino. Tribal Cafe is known to serve “traditional” foods, and it can be deduced that traditional extends beyond just a Filipino population of Historic Filipinotown. The clothes are being offered at extremely cheap rates. It is uncertain as to how many times each article of clothing was worn. The sweaters are dangling as they look very unappealing in this weather. The way in which these clothes are hung and the store is presented gives inference as to the socioeconomic status of the area. This street is not very clean. There are homeless people periodically wandering and sitting throughout the street. Temple Street appears to be one of the busier streets as there is more foot traffic in this area.

10. Arrive at the Cafe

The Press: The walk from 1644 Beverly Boulevard to 1651 W Temple St is approximately an 8-minute walk and roughly 0.4 miles. Union Ave was the main route taken to arrive at our destination.

In my Mind: The menu is difficult to read but it appears that they probably have used the same menu for a long time. This restaurant has an interesting system of ordering. You write your menu choices down on a small piece of paper. This must be difficult to read if handwriting is not neat. It’s dark. The decor is very lively. It’s a more rustic, vintage version of a rainforest-- an escape from the heat in a physical and aesthetic sense.

11. At the Cafe

The Press: Tribal Cafe is a small restaurant located at 1651 W Temple St in Historic Filipinotown. It offers an extensive menu of smoothies and drinks and is best known for offering vegan, vegetarian and traditional dishes. According to their website, www.tribalcafe.com, not only does their menu focus on targeting healthy lifestyle choices, they also fashion their menu to be inspired by current global movements in conscious food consumption.

In my Mind: The chef and cashier, both the same person, is a very kind and thoughtful person. This probably contributes to the popularity of this cafe. At first glance, fellow customers of this restaurant do not appear to be “locals” of Historic Filipinotown. However, it does seem like a very community-based location. Artwork is hung up on the well by what appears to be a variety of differently-aged artists.
