Trowbridge was born in Benton County, Arkansas, on 12 December 1869, the son of Gardner C. and Mary E. (Barhyte) Trowbridge. He moved to Oberlin, Ohio, with his parents in 1876 and again with them to Prairie Plains, Tennessee. He graduated in 1896 from Nashotah House and was ordained a deacon and priest the same year by Bioshop Grafton of Fond du Lac. He served as a missionary to Marshfield and Medford, Wisconsin, from 1896 to 1897, then went to Philadelphia as an assistant at St. Elizabeth's Church. In 1898, he became rector of St. John's Church, Springfield, Missouri, remaining there until 1905. He married Charlotte Frances Goodrow in Elgin, Illinois, on 24 July 1901. He moved to Chicago in 1905, serving ten months at the Church of the Good Shepherd and then moved to St. Bartholomew's Church and served four more years. He became the dean of the Cathedral of Michigan City, Indiana, in 1910, when Bishop White had already left the city and was working to remove Trinity's cathedral designation. He remained there until 1917, when he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and then to Oklahoma. He retired in 1938 and returned to Arkansas, where he filled various pulpits on a temporary basis and did missionary work until his death on 2 May 1948 in Fayetteville. He was buried in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
