Prentiss was born on 6 March 1862 in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of William Otis and Mary (Jenkins) Prentiss. He was the brother of the Rev. Augustine Prentiss, who was also a priest of the church. He married (1) Ann M. Waring in Savannah on 2 February 1887. She died in 1890. He married (2) Martha "Mattie" Eggleston in May 1894. Prentiss served as rector of St. John's, Elkhart from 1891 to 1892. He returned to South Carolina and served a church in Barnwell in 1898. In 1910 he was enumerated in Clinton, Missouri. His wife Mattie died in 1913, and Prentiss married (3) Elizabeth Rust. He died in Richmond, Virginia, on 22 June 1928, with his occupation listed as "collector."
