Murphy was born in Wardesville, Ontario, on 24 March 1896, the son of Joseph Reid and Elizabeth (Locke) Murphy. He was a graduate of Seabury Divinity School and received a Doctorate of Divinity from Nashotah House. He began his career in 1922 as vicar of All Saints Church in Sterling, Colorado. In 1926 he moved to Dallas, Texas, as an assistant at St. Matthew's Cathedral. Staying there two years, he then became chaplain of Margaret Hall, an Episcopal girls school in Versailles, Kentucky. He moved to Howe, Indiana, in 1934 to be rector of St. Mark's and chaplain of Howe School. There he served until 1968, during which time he taught Sacred Studies in the upper school and became the senior priest in the diocese. He served on the Standing Committee and on the Bishop and Council. He died in Lagrange, Indiana, on 30 November 1978 and was buried in St. James Churchyard at Howe.
