Carpenter was born in Rush County, Indiana, on 8 July 1866, the son of Samuel and Sarah (Macklin) Carpenter. He graduated from DePauw University in 1892 and was ordained a deacon in 1896 and a priest in 1897 by Bishop White. He became vicar of Trinity Church, Kendallville, from 1896 to 1898. Four years later he died in Rush County on 8 August 1902.
