Rev. Gustav Arnold Carstensen

The Rev. Gustav Arnold Carstensen was born on the island of St. Croix in the Danish West Indies on 15 June 1851, the son of George John Bernard and Mary Ann (Sempill) Carstensen. He received his B.A. from Hobart College in 1873 and a Bachelor of Theology from General Theological Seminary in 1876. His first assignment came as a missionary in the newly-formed St. John's Church in Elkhart, where he remained only a year. He married Mary Rutherford Thomas on 17 January 1877 while still in Elkhart. His later career took him to Grace Church, Toledo; Christ Church, Meadville, Pennsylvania; St. Paul's Church, Erie, Pennsylvania; St. Paul's, Indianapolis; Christ Church in Riverdale, New York, and Holy Rood Church in New York City. During the Spanish-American War, he was chaplain of the 158th Indiana Regiment. He died on 26 June 1941 in New York City.
