Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Smith was born in Warsaw, Indiana, on 26 February 1863 to uncertain parents. His educational background is unknown, but he married Nellie V. White, daughter of Dr. William White, on 14 June 1893 in Grant County, Indiana. In 1900, he was a traveling salesman, and ten years later he worked as a cutter in a shirt factory in South Bend. As a devout churchman and lay reader, he became acquainted with Bishop John Hazen White, who recruited him in September 1918 for ordination, specifically to fill the pulpit of the Holy Trinity Hungarian Mission in South Bend left vacant by the abrupt departure of the Rev. Victor von Kubinye. Smith accepted the post and proved himself a faithful priest, guiding the mission successfully until his retirement in November 1938. He also briefly had charge of St. John's, Bristol, from 1920 to 1921. He died in South Bend on 18 December 1945.
