Daniel Van Mater Johnson was born on 7 June 1812 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of John Johnson and wife Mary Gilbert (Van Mater). He married first Catherine Griffin Van Wyck on 26 April 1836 in Hopewell, Dutchess County, New York. Following her death he married second Caroline Gertrude Greenly on 11 January 1844 in Oakdale, New York. A graduate of General Theological Seminary in 1835, he organized St. Mary's Church in Williamsburgh, New York, the following year. He also served as rector of Trinity Church, Brooklyn. Later, he moved west under the auspices on the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society, and in 1838 became the first resident priest at Michigan City, Indiana, founding Trinity Church and remaining there until 1841. He was also instrumental in organizing St. Paul's La Porte in 1839. He eventually returned to the East and was active serving a number of churches on Long Island, including St. John's, Oakdale. He died in Brooklyn on 20 November 1890 and was buried in Green-wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
