Charles James Wood was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on 4 July 1854, the son of Charles Lansing and Marian (Davis) Wood. He graduated from Harvard College in 1875, was ordained a deacon in 1878 and a priest the following year by Bishop Talbot. He came to Michigan City as rector of Trinity just after his ordination, serving until 1881. He was single and lived with his parents. In 1895 he became rector of St. John's Church, York, Pennsylvania, and remained there until his death on 9 May 1906. He was buried in St. John's Churchyard.
