While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Using a platform like Comic Life encourages students to think about their topics (historical, scientific, fictional, and sociological) visually, consider ways to sequence ideas to promote readability, and choose a path to make their points and reach a designated conclusion. The makers of the software make suggestions for classroom use on their site. Students enjoy this kind of writing and feel free to experiment with ideas and engage in risky writing.
Comic Life has a free 30 day trial. After the trial period, the software costs $29.95. However, all the PCs at the Freedman Center at KSL are loaded with this software to use without charge!
