Clicking the Search link opens a sidebar populated with 283 index terms, which include people and place names, concepts, and events:
When the user begins to type, only matching terms (if any) are displayed:
When the user clicks the term, links to the essays in which the term appears are displayed:
As of June 2017, only a portion of the full text of the site has been indexed by Google, but the link that Google provides is usually to /console, the general landing page, rather than a permalink to a specific essay. This makes it difficult for interested Googlers to locate the essay whence their search terms came.
For instance, searching Google for this phrase...
...yields a search result that looks like this:
The linked URL points to http://www.enchantingthedesert.com/console/, not to http://enchantingthedesert.com/console/#essay/11 (Building Grand Canyon, Part III: Fred Harvey Co.).
