DHSI 2017: Documenting "Enchanting the Desert"

Essays

The 82 essays in the project cover the cultural history of the Grand Canyon and are divided into 6 chapters: Introduction, Toponymy, Exploration, Settlement, Tourism, and Infrastructure. All essays are connected to a slide image, and several essays are connected to multiple slide images.

Navigation

As mentioned in the User experience overview, there are several ways that users can navigate Enchanting the Desert. One sequence users can follow is the sequence of essays and chapters, as laid out in the table of contents:

On each essay's page, the previous/next arrows are on the lower left, bookending the chapter title.

Affordances

Sidenotes

Footnotes are rendered as sidenotes alongside the essay text, roughly in line with where they are cited.

 

Inline images

Bauch illustrates some points with additional images inside the text of the essay.

Share and cite



When Share and Cite are clicked, a popup window appears with auto-generated text that can be copied.

Print

When Print is clicked, a new window/tab opens with a plain HTML rendering of the essay, complete with headings, links, and a citation. Sidenotes are rendered as footnotes at the bottom of the page. The page is ideally styled for printing, but the URL is not a permalink.
