Clicking the Search link opens a sidebar populated with 283 index terms, which include people and place names, concepts, and events: When the user begins to type, only matching terms (if any) are displayed: When the user clicks the term, links to the essays in which the term appears are displayed:
As of June 2017, only a portion of the full text of the site has been indexed by Google, but the link that Google provides is usually to /console, the general landing page, rather than a permalink to a specific essay. This makes it difficult for interested Googlers to locate the essay whence their search terms came.
