How to Encode Information

There are two basic approaches to encoding information. The first entails building a custom database and platform [2]. The second involves selecting a digital tool that mediates the encoding processes. Whereas the first approach allows for greater customizability and processing opportunities, the second provides a lower barrier of entry and frequently promotes data interoperability by standardizing the encoding process.

Whether you start from scratch or use 

There are a number of platforms- including Scalar, Omeka, Wordpress, Drupal, and CollectiveAccess- that function as relational databases enabling users to catalogue, search, browse, and exhibit digital collections.
