How to Encode Information
There are two basic approaches to encoding information. The first entails building a custom database and platform. The second involves selecting a pre-made tool that mediates the encoding processes. Whereas the first approach allows for greater customizability, the second offers a lower barrier of entry and often promotes interoperability by standardizing the encoding process. There are a number of platforms- including Scalar, Omeka, Wordpress, Drupal, and CollectiveAccess- that function as relational databases enabling users to catalogue, search, browse, and exhibit digital collections.
