Prologue: A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace

At the World Economic Forum on Feb. 8, 1996, John Perry Barlow published “A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace.” As a renowned digital activist and a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Barlow’s writing is now regarded as a prototype of self-governing Internet.

As you can hear from this recording, a part of the Declaration is read as such:
 

“I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind...On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past (government) to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather. We are creating a world where anyone, anywhere may express his or her beliefs, no matter how singular, without fear of being coerced into silence or conformity.”


This statement clearly defends individual's freedom of speech in defiance of government meddling. Indeed, freedom of speech has been one of the core values of Internet culture, to which much-needed social changes and transformations throughout the world have been attributed.
