As with several other terms (GREAT AWAKENING, NORTHWEST, OLD RECONSTRUCTION, SOUTHERN), THE WEST appears in LCSH without a geographic gloss (or descriptive terms) that would indicate that they are specific to the United States. As Berman states in his justifications, "[all] express a facet of distinctly American history or politics which lay foreigners cannot reasonably be expected to appreciate.
