The unforgivable 2012 is a movie that is based on the historic conspiracy that the world as according to the Mayan calendar shall end.
The movie focus on a few aspects that are built on from the main topic of ecohorror. The plot of the film shows that in the end the clear environmental solution to the problem is the destruction of the entire earth population. Unlike many other environmental based movies and books, where generally eco horror is much less devasting or is at least not ending the world, in 2012 we can see the directors bringing nothing short of a complete alienation to all of earth and its inhaibtents.
Theme #1 - Natures Power: The movie though very unrealistic in the climate change aspects is quite revolutionary in bringing a light to the environmental theme of ecohorror, through such intense and dramatic sensory through – with so much to think about as an audience member the thought of climate change, global warming, and global change quickly come to mind even thought the movie does not explicit tie this destruction of earth directly to human causes. Rather the movie ties the destruction of earth to a natural phenomena that occurs in the universe. Yet watching the movie, the thought of environmental harm and climate change greatly take over, and correlate to a lot of the warnings of environmental crisis we run into today.
This topic of ecohorror brought to us through climate change and global change as in the movie 2012 is very effective at communicating what could potentially occur to earth. Even though many scenes are dramatic and over the top, 2012 brings light to many of the environmental phenomena’s we deal with as a society of earth today, day after day. The continuous rise in global temperatures, extreme weather phenomes, melting of poles, droughts, and flood. The film does an effective job of relating the big events it uses throughout to events that we face constantly just on a much smaller scale.
This theme of eco horror not only brings light to theis topics but creates sub controversy and themes underneath that we see in the movie and in the real world today such as our next theme.
Theme #2 - Class Seperation: One noticeable theme in the movie if the idea of class separation that can quickly related to the very real aspects of our world as well. In the movie we can see that those who will survive the earths ends are the world’s elite and wealthy who are chosen by their ability to pay for a ticket to board one of these arcs. In the movie the entire time the elites and leaders of the world keep the worlds end a secret, and only provided the information to those who will be abord the ships as well. They feel safe that their belongings, their lives, family and ultimately themselves will be safe. This correlates to today’s society where the effects of climate change cause many changes to earths features, and a variety of areas are affected by climate change. – the main issue though that occurs is when those who are affected to not have the means, power, or money to be able to re-vitalize back to prior conditions that affected areas, or do not have the ability to move.
Adrian Helmsley: " The moment we stop fighting for each other, that's the moment we lose our humanity."(2012, Adrian Helmsely)
Adrians qoute not only ties in the problems that occur when hummanity becomes divded and only thinks about oneself, but Adrian also speaks to the topic of equailty trhoughout the movie and than the arcs should allow as many people as possible to board not only those who have bought a ticket but everyone from the workers who built them, to the ciztens who knew nothing of the world end, simply everyone. In the end, a large part of allowing more people aboard the arcs was due to Helmsley who contuisly advoacted for the people.
Yet, given the premise that is quite far reaching of the world being compelty destoryed, unfortunately the movie does not present us with any answer or solution to the problem, with the best minds in the world unable to find an environmental solution that would benefit all or even some of mankind. The only solution, if can be called a solution was found by the elite leaders of the world who began their secret building of giant arks that would be able survive this massive end to the world and would protect those who could afford to be abord the arks( a ticket costing 1 billion dollars per person). In the movie the scene as pictured depicts the Saudi Prince reading over the contract to purchase tickets for his family for the arc’s, it is in these scenes we realize that there is some sort of saving of mankind being done but only to those who can afford it. Changing the audience perspective of every government leader and high officials’ duty and honesty to the people for the rest of the movie.
Adrian Helmsley: "To be human means to care for each other and civilization means to work together to create a better life" (2012, Adrian Helmsely)
Today, we see this in many 3rd world countries that are affected by climate change such as droughts, floods, massive earthquakes, etc. Most of these people within these nations are not able to do anything to rebuild or move out, many are either displaced into worser conditions or must somehow live in these new uninhabitable conditions. When Helmsley states " To be human means to care for each other and civilization means to work together to create a better life." it he presents to us the meaning of working together, helping each other, working in tandem and not against each other. In the Movie Helmsley can be seen bring together the different leaders of the world and teaching them about the unfortunate events that were about to occur. It was Helmsley who brought people together on the arc when the leaders were against it, and it was Helmsley who was responsible for saving so many more people than the leaders wanted. Which ultimately brings us to the effect that climate change has as shown in the movie – yes as a humanity we may all have an impact on the causes of climate change but the majority of contributors to the causes of climate change have the resources and power to fix at least today the problems caused when climate changes sweeps through, those who have less effect on the causes are just as much so affected by climate change yet they are not able to rebuild, move, change, or redo the aspects that were changed/destroyed by climate change.
Final Thoughts: What made the movie 2012 so effective as a movie which was reflected through its box office numbers was a few key aspects. First, it used the already known phenomena of the upcoming year of 2012, the movie had only built on people curiosity to give perhaps a slight answer even if movie fiction to what could happen when the end of the world really does come or, so it was thought. The movie did just that it completely attracted audience by feeding on this curiosity and greatly giving back through the disasters that took place nearly every minute of the movie. Which brings us to our second point that environmental disasters are a undoability a fan favorite, and that even though we as society know that many of these disasters can and are related/tied to us as their cause, audiences find these movies that display the cause of our work as an intriguing setting and plot addition to nearly any movie and story not just 2012.
