Literary and Publishing Scene

O'Neill sent a few of his books to publishers, writers and editors in Ireland, Irish American and African American communities. His attention to those who were in key places of authority in the publishing world suggests that he was keenly aware of the role of publications in national and diasporic identity. Of particular note is O'Neill's dedication to Julius Taylor, Editor of the Broad Ax - the first African American newspaper in Chicago. Though we do not have a image of this dedication page, the text of it is included on the pages of the newspaper, and praise for O'Neill as a figure "who absolutely refused to bow down in front of the altar of race prejudice" (see article) is throughout the Broad Ax.
