Plastered T-Shirts

Plastered T-Shirts is a local Beijing clothing brand was founded in 2006 by Dominic Johnson-Hill, utilizing different retro-type images, old Beijing artifacts (particularly from the early 1980s), and other "everyday images", in order to highlight "the absurd, the beautiful and the glorious of everyday life in China – beds of roses juxtaposed against construction cranes; Chairman Mao’s face stenciled on a t-shirt with a cell phone number spray-painted below with the message: “To Serve the People”. The shirts represent a type of Beijing cool.

Its initial store is located in Nanluoguxiang, and I would stop in every time I walked by, saying hello to the old ladies who worked the store, and buying any new design that caught my eye. I probably have over 20 of the shirts, proudly wearing them with Beijing pride in other parts of the world, and thus participating in a form of global circulation. I have seen them in shops in Seattle and Los Angeles and can always spot one in the crowd.
