Great Leap Brewery

One of the new trends that hit Beijing in the years I was there was American style microbrewing. Great Leap Brewery was one of the first, opening a bar in a courtyard on a lane off of Nanluoguxiang. The beers are inspired by Chinese history and Chinese ingredients, moving through the rotating taps. But staples include beer brewed with Sichuan peppercorns and honey, infused with Chinese black tea, local pumpkins and cinnamon, and so on. Each beer is branded with a unique style and image, drawn from Chinese history, with a particular theme of 50's Communist graphics derived from the brewery's name. Again, founded by foreigners, this brewery represents a hybrid culture and is totally global. . . featured in international style and travel magazines. It too represents Beijing cool and the unique mixing that occurs in the city.
