Great Hall of the People

The 人民大会堂 or The Great Hall of the People can be found at the west side of Tian'anmen. It is the government meeting place, home to the National People's Congress and Parliament. Built in 1959 it is one of the Ten Great Constructions of the Communist Period.

It is also somewhere that I've always wanted to go.

This dream was achieved on a spring evening. A friend's grandparents, who were Party Members, had tickets for a film screening that evening and I was invited. What would they play? Some patriotic movie? It was a mystery. . .

When the lights dimmed, a surprise came. . . An American action film Battle: Los Angeles. How strange!

So I sat in the seats of Chinese power and watched this film, dubbed in Chinese with a bunch of old party members. Projected in the giant screen of the Great Hall. The global flow of Hollywood had reached the sacred corridors of Communist power!
