Architecture As Art And The Branding Of Dubai

Dubai uses land to contribute to the branding of the city. These pieces of land have become icons of Dubai and represent its power not only through it's engineering but through it's appearance.

Not only is this building a great example of ingenious engineering but it is also a work of art in the form of architecture. The building stands of the shore of Dubai, the mere fact that you must take a man made road to arrive to the hotel serves as a visual tool to enhance the size of the building. Shape and color of the building also serve to demonstrate that the Burj Al Arab is a piece of art, these two elements allow for people inside the city to marvel at the hotel from afar. Just like any other work of art the hotel must be conserved through a serious of meticulous preservation methods. According to the video Dubai: The Greatest City on Earth workers from the hotel hang from the top of the building and clean the sand that attaches to it every time there is a sandstorm. The job of these workers is to preserve the outside beauty of the building.

The island was built due to a lack in the beach front property. The video Dubai: The Greatest City on Earth claims that a plot in Palm Island can cost up to $50 million. It was created by bringing sand from the bottom of the ocean until it created a flat surface. Then it was carved into the shape of a palm, from the air one can clearly see the shape of a palm. One may even argue that it is art in the form of a sculpture. A sculpture that captures the ambition of the city in terms of wanting to create itself as a brand. This island serves as a way to portray Dubai as invisible because they were able to create a man made island.
