The Youth, Marketing Techniques, and Medicine
My research is centered on Allen's Root Beer card, Parker's Ginger Tonic, and Carter's Little Liver pills. These three UCLA patent trade cards from the library provide a story of the how physicians created advertisements for pills, potions, and medicines that will cure all types of problems. The three trade cards tell the story of how all different types of pains including headaches, liver problems, and digestion can all be cured with pills and tonics. All trade cards are related to each other as they use unique and effective marketing strategies were utilized to sell the product to the consumers and attract customers including depictions of little girls on the front of the card, bolded font, and phrases that catch the peoples attention.
My anchor image shows the front of the Parker's Ginger Tonic card. I chose to use this as my image as it follows an orange theme. The tonic that I being promoted is referred to as a ginger tonic, it said to cure coughs, colds, blood problems and many other sicknesses. When an individual thinks of ginger they think of the color of orange which is heavily emphasized in this trade card. A young girl is portrayed on the front of the trade card which represents kindness and innocent which is a tactic used to bring in consumers. The girl has rosy cheeks which makes her look cuter and entices more customers. She is wearing an orange dress which makes her look very pretty and healthy. This marketing of utilizing the color orange and portraying youth to represent their tonic attracts consumers as they too will associate the ginger tonic with making them feel healthier, younger, and feeling youthful again. In this anchor image I also focused on the font and using the word "everybody" and "invigorating" customers are brought to believe that they need this tonic to help cure thief coughs and colds.
The back of Parker’s Ginger Tonic includes an is an entire list of diseases and illnesses that gingers tonic can cure as listed on the back of the card. The type of medicine that is being promoted is a tonic that cures a very broad list of symptom and sickness from malaria to bronchitis to the common cough which is an alternative medicine to surgery, pills, and drug-medicine.
The next card in my research is Allen’s Root Beer extract. The front of this card also includes a picture a young girl. The story of the card continues as she is wearing a bow tie in her hair. The bow ties are significant as they portray the girls youth and kindness which makes the advertisement more appealing. Customers are enticed to buy the product as they want to feel more youthful and get rid of their pain.
On the back the information regarding the extract is explained. The root beer extract is another beverage that is promoted to curing kidney and liver disease. The ingredients from which its made from is listen and is completely herbal such as ginger, black birch, and pipsissewa. It is very easy to make this beverage and is explained that there is a huge demand for this cure. This is significant as it influences consumers to buy the root beer which is another type of alternative medecine to feel healthy and relieve all their diseases and pain.
This image is cropped to emphasize the portrayed of the little young girl that is found on all three of my cards. This is a unique marketing rational physicians used to attract customers to buy their products. The young girls are always dressed up with flowers, bowties, and dresses to appear cuter and youthful and entice consumers.
The third card in my project is Carter’s little liver pills. The front of the card once again shows an infant who is nude. This is very helpful to understanding the type of advertisements for cures that were used during this time period. The red color and outline are also very useful to attract individuals to buy these magical pills to cure their headaches.
The back of this card has very special and distinctive fonts and layout. This capitalization and bolded font makes the product stand out and further convinces peoples that this pill is effective and will take all the sickheadache pain away. Also, customers have been promised that the relief they feel from this pill is permanent which is very helpful and enticing to customers as everybody wants to get rid of their pain as soon as possible to feel better and live a healthy life. Carter’s little liver pills show how one simple pill can cure a huge range of illnesses as well as being irregular as they are made out of vegetables only.
Throughout this course we have been working with comparative analysis and annotations. I incorporated these skills when completing my project and research on the three patent medical trade cards. I compared the trade cards that I chose and wrote descriptions for them analyzing the front and back. I noticed they all shared the common theme of curing illnesses ranging from headaches, to coughs, to digestion and even kidney and liver diseases. They differ in the form of medicines/cure as some cures are beverages such as Allens root beer and the Ginger tonic while others were pills such as the headache pill. They are all also forms of alternative medicine that are promised to cure a range of everyday illnesses. All the cards also portray a little girl on the front which entices customers. The marketing strategies utilizes in the three cards attract customers to put the product so that they can feel youthful and healthy again.
