The appeal made by the original picture to sympathies as tender as they are universal, will not, we trust, be deemed any the less acceptable in the miniature copy offered for your approval in this, the eighth issue of our series. And now, referring to our remedies : If the health of any grown person is in question, and such symptoms are apparent as low spirits, restlessness, sour stomach, sick headache, a variable appetite, rising of food after eating, oppression of the stomach, low fever, languor, and irregularity of the bowels, rest assured it is a form of Dyspepsia - a complaint tending to break down the general stamina, and thus open the way for many serious physical evils. The remedy needed is Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge, not as a Vermifuge, but as a general Tonic. Two teaspoonfuls of this medicine, mixed with four tablespoonfuls of water, taken after each meal, keeping the bowels gently open when necessary with Dr. Jayne's Sanative Pills, will soon overcome the worst symptoms and remove this distressing disease. If the health of your children is in question, and such symptoms are noticed as a variable appetite, with strange cravings, picking the nose, excessive thirst, low fever, bad breath, pale, sallow complexion, occasionally flushed cheeks, a wasting away, great nervousness, fitful sleep, grinding of the teeth, accompanied by weakness of the bowels - they indicate that the child is troubled with those dreadful pests, Worms, which worry its delicate system, and are producing such irritation and debility as will surely break down the constitution, and if the cause is not removed, may bring on St. Vitus' Dance or Convulsions, and render its after-life a burden. To save your child use Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge, according to the directions, and you will not only destroy the worms, but its tonic properties will rebuld the general health - no other worm medicine possessing such qualities. When woems are not indicated, and a gentle tonic is required, the vermifuge may be given with excellent results after each meal, in much smaller doses than for worms. For coughs, colds, throat and lung troubles, as everybody well knows, Dr. Jayne's Expectorant is the standard family remedy. Presented by W. H. In my individual page, I will be diving into the three trade cards i have been studying this quarter. All three of these trade cards share similarities in the sense that they appeal to the emotions and fears of the consumers. They do so by listing extreme symptoms that could plague the ill, to small things such as kids not wanting to eat certain foods, and use these examples to effectively market to a uninformed group of individuals, who fall for the trap without proper medical information
The front of this trade card portrays a boy standing somewhat jolly, behind a brick wall. He is seemingly holding a colorful cane, wearing circular glasses and a top hat with a tassel on the end. He is seen holding a mysterious brown article that is attached to the cane and is almost showing it off. The back of the card goes into detail about why this certain medication is of importance for a specific audience, and this is for women. It talks about issues of certain sufferings that women experience in the three stages of their development; being the “maiden, the wife, and the mother”, and how these sufferings are commonly experienced in private, without the recognition of even those like their primary doctors. This tonic is designed to make one’s blood clean and healthy and “cures constipation, liver and kidney complaint, female weakness, nervous and general debility, and all the distressing miseries from which two-thirds of the women of America are suffering.”This front of this card portrays a younger looking lady on a pony, prancing through the beautiful greenery with her dog by her side scurrying along. In the dog’s mouth, he is holding a basket, and in this basket are different greens that presumably represent freshly picked vegetables or fruits and a bottle of Pond’s Extract as well. On the back of the trade card, they took the entire name and made abbreviations for each word relating to the symptoms this drug cures Piles, Old Sores, Neuralgia, Diphtheria, Sprains, Eyes inflamed, External use, Tonsillitis, Rheumatism, Accidents, Catarrh, and Throat Sore.
On the front of this trade card there are four individuals, gathered around a table. In this gathering, they are seemingly reading a book that I observe to be the bible. The father is the one reading, as his wife sits in a very focused and serious demeanor. Then, the other two that I presume to be his daughter and maid to be quite engaged in this recital. This piece of art was painted by renowned Scotch artist Thomas Faed and as it shows in the back of the trade card that these 4 individuals all seem to represent a different symptom that this medication has been created to treat. Symptoms that this deals with are “low spirits, restlessness, sour stomach, sick headache, a variable appetite, rising of food after eating, oppression of the stomach, low fever, languor, and irregularity of the bowels.” It then shows that these symptoms are attributed to the disease known as “Dyspepsia” and promises for this special tonic to be a cure to this problem. It then also goes on to show that even children who deal with symptoms such as “variable appetite, with strange cravings, picking the nose, excessive thirst, low fever, bad breath, pale, sallow complexion, occasionally flushed cheeks, a wasting away, great nervousness, fitful sleep, grinding of the teeth, accompanied by weakness of the bowels” then this is worms, which if not treated with this tonic can result in death.
