Trading on Youth and Beauty: The Exploitation of Women and Children in Trade Card Marketing
58
Women and children have been used as marketing tools in America for decades, if not centuries. Advertisers capitalized on the societal norms and gender roles of the time, creating trade cards that played to the traditional ideals of women looking a certain way.-By Chandler Warth

Children were used in advertising, often as cute and innocent models to sell products. Companies targeted parents by using children in their trade cards, appealing to their emotions and desire to provide the best for their children. For example, the Allen’s root beer trade card for making homemade root beer features a smiling, healthy and happy child, suggesting that their product will make the child happier and healthier. This card also prides itself on being "perfectly safe for children" which plays more into the emotional marketing. Another marketing tactic has to do with the way these companies use makeup to make the children look happier and younger. They do this in order to appeal to the emotions and desires of consumers, which are usually the parents. The patent medicine trade card for "Three most reliable remedies, Athlophoros for Rheumatism and Neuralgia, Athlo-Ointment for Sprains, Lameness, Sore throat, etc., Athlo-Tablets for Constipated Rheumatics" features advertisements for three different remedies, each marketed as a reliable treatment for specific health conditions. The graphic of this card is a beautiful woman with nicely done hair, a face full of makeup and bright clothing. The way she looks is supposed to draw the gaze of customers, as beauty often is used to get people to become consumers of the product. This concept of using a woman's attractiveness to market a product is known as "sex appeal" or "sexual imagery" in advertising. The use of sexual imagery in marketing has a long history, and it continues to be a popular strategy today.
This early, modest use of sexual imagery can be effective in capturing the attention of consumers and making a product more memorable. When this woman is used to market this product, her attractiveness can create a positive association between the product and desirable qualities, such as beauty, youthfulness, and sexiness. Even though the product being marketed has nothing to do with being beautiful, the health and youthfulness is definitely a commonality. As time progressed, the portrayal of women in advertising became more sexualized. Women were objectified and used to sell products, often in suggestive poses and clothing. Advertisers exploited the male gaze, using women's bodies to sell everything.
The trade card of a manufacturer of umbrellas, canes, and related objects features an image of the company's products, along with a description of the materials. The front of the trade card features a colorful illustration of the company's products being used by this assumed young boy. The back of the trade card contains more detailed information about the products, as well as contact information for the company in french. In addition to describing the products, the trade card also highlights the benefits of using an umbrella or cane. For example, this card emphasizes the protection that an umbrella provides from the rain or the sun as the boy uses it while sailing on the barrel. The usage of a young boy instead of an older man or adult is more beneficial to the company because as we know using the youth as a tool for marketing has a relationship with emotion.

Using Children as a Method of Advertising
30
Trading cards have been proven to be a tactical approach to advertising. One of the methods the trading cards use is the depiction of children as a way of drawing attention to their products. By putting children on the front of their trading cards, it captures the attention of the audience and encourages them to look into the product. - By Odelia Safadel

After spending ten weeks looking closely at all the trading cards whether from the UCLA library or from online libraries and databases, there were many trading cards that had similar elements throughout. One of the main functions of trading cards was advertising and capturing the attention of people who were looking at the trading cards. There are many different approaches to gain attention. Throughout this course, we learned that some of the ways were through clothing, color, children, etc.
One of the ways of capturing attention is by appealing to people's vulnerability and weak points. A main approach to capture people's attention is through the use of children. Children represent youth and innocence which is appealing to the masses. Many of the trading cards we examined and looked at this quarter incorporated this method of advertising.
Allen's Root Beer Extract is a prime example of trading cards using children and their purity to advertise their product. Dr. Allen's Root Beer Extract is advertised as a pleasant and healthy beverage and utilizes a little girl on the front side to capture the audience's attention. The fact that the front side includes the illustration highlights that the image of the little girl is far more powerful than the fine print that is on the backside. While the information is important because it explains what the beverage is and who can enjoy it, this remains on the backside because it is not the point of interest that will capture the audience's attention.
When taking a look at the trading card, The Nerve Pencil, on the right side, the front side of the trading card includes the image of a little girl. This little girl embodies youth and innocence. This is purposeful and with clear intention. Children and youth are a vehicle for advertising and targeting audiences. Many people have a weakness for children because of their representation of youth and innocence. This girl is seen on the front of the trading card who is free of nerve pain and is able to play freely with the birds in nature.
Another trading card that uses children as an approach of advertising is Dr. Radcliff's Great Remedy. The front side of this trade card also includes two young girls, however, the difference in this one versus the other two is that they are kissing. Furthermore, this front side features these two girls wearing white dresses. The color white signifies purity and innocence which is a Western belief This is why it is common for brides to wear the color white for their wedding day. While the color white represents purity and innocence, youth and children also allude to this connotation.
Overall, the theme seen throughout these selected three trading cards is that children are a successful point of advertisement. Using images of children plays on the emotions of people and opens their hearts to vulnerability. Portraying young children happy and in bliss exemplifies how effective and proves to heal people who intake it. This is a marketing technique used to advertise their products and they are effectively catching the attention of their audience.
