My Fear Led to Realization.

“I came to realize my displeasure of wearing the hijab was because of my peers. Peers of which I’ve learned to disassociate myself with, who used to mockingly ask, “Are you a terrorist?  Why do you hide your hair? Is it because you’re ashamed?” Comments like those uttered by “friends” saw no end. Every hateful comment rooted from the cloth that wrapped around my head. For me, it was a symbol of purity for them it was a symbol of hate. However, today I’m proud to stand up and say I’m pleased to wear the hijab. To wear this piece of cloth which sits perfectly on my head in every season: through the raging heat, through ice-breaking winter, through the flowers blossoming and through the changing colors. I no longer wear the hijab for my community or for my parents. Now, I wear the hijab for myself. Now, I wear the hijab to break stereotypes. Now I wear the hijab to show that I’m proud to be a Muslim.” - Alyah Lima
