The Mechanics of "My Body"

My Body involves clicking through drawings of anatomical structures attached to text recounting memories associated with those body parts. The different structures are hyperlinked together and can be interacted with in any order. This short clip shows the complexity in pathing that the reader may take between certain body parts such as between the starting image and legs. The reader is able to discern a page that they have already viewed because that hyperlink will be purple colored rather than blue. The unordered aspect of My Body allows the reader to interact with the work more intimately by choosing where to spend the majority of their time. It also conveys how the narrator valued all body parts and associated memories equally. As Jake Boese explains in his formal analysis of the work, “the order in which it would have been put could lead a reader to believe that certain things are more important than others” (Boese). The lack of organization emphasizes the extent to which the narrator's entire background molded her into the person that she became. All experiences, whether good or bad, have an effect on character. The next four pages will summarize the significance of four different body parts. These are randomly selected but all indicate how physical examination reveals a deeper characterization.
