The Journey of Dan Katzir and Ravit Markus from Israel to Los Angeles
by Ryan Davidson and Jacob LahanaPartners Dan Katzir and Ravit Markus are critically acclaimed directors, producers, and media consultants. Throughout their lives, both have spent time in Israel and the United States, thus creating a transnational identity which is reflected in their works. They currently reside in Los Angeles, CA where they raise their child and work in the artistic field of filmmaking.
Dan Katzir was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and comes from a prestigious family background. Katzir often traveled between the US and Israel as a child and attended high school in Massachusetts. This movement fostered Katzir’s transnational identity, which can be seen throughout his works. After high school, Katzir served in the IDF as a combat soldier. Later, Katzir attended Tel Aviv University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and made his feature film, Out for Love… Be Back Shortly (1997). Katzir then immigrated to Los Angeles to attend the American Film Institute in Hollywood. Katzir continues his career as a documentary filmmaker and producer for his company, New Love Films.
Ravit Markus’s first immigration experience at five years old gave her a transnational identity that would make future travel between the US and Israel less intimidating. In Israel, Markus served in the IDF and worked in the film unit doing what she loves—making films. Markus also attended Tel Aviv University where she continued to learn about cinema and filmmaking. This is also where she first encountered her future partner and husband, Dan Katzir. Subsequently, Markus moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in media where she founded their company, New Love Films.
