Working with Sound

Welcome

Welcome to Working with Sound: Introduction to Audio Recording and Editing and asycrinious tutorial that focuses on will help you gain or improve your skills by discussing the basics of sound, sound recording, and sound editing using Audacity. You will also be introduced to adding and editing sound in iMovie, a video editing application since many of you likely want to be creating videos with better sound and not just audio projects like podcasts.

Speaking for myself (and I suspect many others), I can more easily sit through a movie with mediocre photography than I can mediocre sound. The former is disappointing and sometimes frustrating. The latter can be not just frustrating but also jaring and irritating. Sound, I would argue, is more bodily. Perhaps this speaks to what sound is--sound is a form of energy caused by vibrations and travels in waves--and how we hear--

Everyone knows bad sound recording and editing when they hear it yet many of us find that we have trouble doing quality sound work ourselves. In the world of filmmaking, I would argue that sound quality is more important than picture quality.

The intent is to to give you an understanding of the range of possibilities on how to produce the best quality sound you can creating in a variety of conditions, from being at home due to is sound dedicated space.

So let's start with a really important question. What is sound?

Sound is a form of energy caused by vibrations and travels in waves.
