They fought against discrimination based on race, religion, or national origin, an extremely common occurrence in American culture at the time, because they knew how destructive this kind of discrimination could be to honest workers. They also fought for fair pay for their members so that they might gain their fair share of the wealth they helped produce. The ultimate goal of the United Mine Workers of America was to create peace between workers and employers so that strikes and resentment would become a thing of the past.
