Working Class Rhetoric: An Exploration of The Mining Rhetoric of Southeast Kansas

The Hearl Maxwell Collection

The Hearl Maxwell Collection, currently stored in the Special Collections at Pittsburg State University's Axe Library, contains correspondence, broadsides, union records and circulars, convention proceedings, photographs, publications, and miscellaneous material documenting Hearl Maxwell's time as an officer of District 14 of The United Mine Workers of America in southeast Kansas. In addition to documenting his activities, there is a considerable amount of information regarding the activities of Alexander Howat, the president of District 14, as well as the struggles miners faced as they fought for fair treatment.

Students of Dr. McDaniel's Digital Humanities class have worked together to digitize the Hearl Maxwell Collection. From this, we have asked many questions regarding rhetoric and document design and used Voyant and Scalar to put together our findings. This Scalar book explores Working Class and Union Rhetoric, the Amazon Army, Disability in the Mining Community, and Poverty Rhetoric and Reform in Southeast Kansas Mining Culture.
